Help/Instructions - Under Construction

Getting Started

So you've installed the extension right? These instructions will guide you through the features of the Minimap sidebar Addon - it is recommended you follow them top to bottom as I have tried to write them so that the features unravel themselves as you progress.

First off, if you have space, drag in the Sidebar Toolbar button: right click anywhere on your firefox toolbar and select customize. From the dialog, drag and drop the small square Map icon where you want it to reside.

As well as this Sidebar button, there are a number of ways to launch the sidebar and map tab. You can use View > Sidebar > Minimap, CTRL + SHIFT + E, click on the statusbar icon (small map icon bottom right of Firefox window) and select 'Open Minimap Sidebar' or 'Open Map Tab', or finally right-click anywhere on a page and select 'Open Minimap Sidebar' or 'Open Map Tab'

Now that you have the sidebar open, we are going to set your mapping locale. Click on the tools button on the far left of the Minimap toolbar and select 'Options' from the drop down menu. Click on the Google tab in the dialog that appears, and type in a google maps domain for your locale, eg. maps.google.co.uk or maps.google.es. Default is maps.google.com. This helps the minimap addon when geocoding addresses, for example searching for Toledo will by return the USA location by default, changing this domain to maps.google.es will return the Spanish location. When done, close the Options dialog

We are now going to set your home coordinates and default address. Click on the Add Address toolbarbutton on the far right of Minimap toolbar and select 'Add Address/Location from the drop down menu. A dialog will prompt you for a Title, eg. My Home, an address and optionally a website URL and description. Type in the values for your home or office and hit OK. All being well your address should geocode, add a blue marker to the map, pan to it and add an addresslist item. If an exact match cannot be found, you may well find that the extension offers a list of possible matches. Click on the one that matches what you are after and then it will be added.
Now go to the addresslist and right-click on the address you just added. From the pop-up menu select 'Set as Map Home', then right click again and select 'Set as default address'.

That's the initial setup complete, and we can now begin to explore Minimaps functions in greater detail.

Adding Addresses

We have just seen one method to add an address by using the manual toolbar button. You can continue to add as many addresses/locations as you wish using this method. However, the minimap addon is specifically designed to interact with addresses you find on webpages.

You can highlight an address and then drag and drop it onto the sidebar (either the grey dropbox or actually on the map will work). Try highlighting this address and then drag and drop it onto the open sidebar:

1981 Landings Drive
Building K
Mountain View, CA 94043
USA

Note that the title given to the addresslist item is that of the webpage, as you dragged from here. You can edit this which we will look at a bit further down.

You can highlight an address, right-click and select 'Map Sidebar: Locate...' or 'Map Tab: Locate...'. Try highlighting this address and adding to the sidebar - sidebar can be open or closed. The Map Tab shares the same addresses/locations as the sidebar, it is entirely up to you which you ultimately prefer to use.

1600 Amphitheatre Parkway
Mountain View
California, CA 94303 USA

Finally for this section, we will look at adding Google Maps or Yahoo Maps links. Drag and drop or right-click and select 'Open Link in Minimap Sidebar' these two links:

View in Google Maps

View in Yahoo Maps

Edit/Delete Addresses

If you followed the step above, you should now have 4 markers/addresslist items, all with the same title. To edit, right-click on an item and select properties from the popup menu. A dialog should open, make your changes and then click ok to save.

To delete an address, right-click on an item and select delete from the popup menu.

This page is still being written but the above should give you a good headstart.
